A multi-disciplinary consortium comprising University College Dublin, University of Galway, and Amplitude Acoustics is pioneering a strategic response to Ireland's escalating urban noise pollution, a critical issue impacting public health, social well-being, and economic productivity. Existing acoustic materials are demonstrably insufficient against pervasive environmental noise, creating a significant market gap and regulatory pressure point within the construction sector. Led by Dr. Muhammad Gulzari, Dr. Eoin King, and Dr. Emmet English, the initiative is advancing research into acoustic metamaterials to deliver breakthrough noise control solutions. This collaborative model, pooling expertise across environmental noise, acoustics, and advanced materials, is essential for navigating the problem's inherent complexity. The project, leveraging initial seed funding, is now actively pursuing substantial follow-on investment from Horizon Europe, EPA, and Enterprise Ireland, alongside discussions with industry partners for IPP funding. A core strategic objective is the commercialisation of these innovative metamaterials via mass-manufacturing for building insulation. For senior decision-makers in construction and advanced materials, this presents a significant opportunity to invest in scalable, cutting-edge technology offering superior acoustic performance, enhanced sustainability, and design versatility, poised to redefine industry standards and mitigate a pressing societal challenge.
