BAM Ireland has been awarded the Design and Build contract for Greystones Community College in Co. Wicklow, a flagship post-primary education facility designed to accommodate 1,000 pupils by autumn 2025. This significant public-sector project, delivered under the Department of Education’s programme, exemplifies a strategic integration of sustainability and modern construction methodologies. A core tenet of the build is its commitment to a reduced carbon footprint and enhanced operational economy. Notably, BAM is implementing an innovative soil stabilisation technique for raft slab foundations. This negates the extensive excavation and off-site export of soil, and subsequent importation of fill material, significantly lowering environmental impact and offering potential cost efficiencies through material reuse. Further demonstrating advanced construction practices, the project employs a precast concrete frame for the main structure, facilitating rapid assembly and adherence to a challenging programme schedule. This undertaking not only addresses critical educational infrastructure needs but also serves as a practical demonstration of how sustainable building practices, coupled with modern methods of construction, can be effectively scaled within public procurement frameworks. The project’s high-level political endorsement, including attendance by An Taoiseach, Simon Harris TD, underscores a growing emphasis on green building and efficient delivery in national development agendas.
