Frank H. Dale, a long-established UK structural steelwork fabricator, has significantly bolstered operational efficiency and safety through the strategic deployment of Combilift's Straddle Carrier (Combi-SC). Confronted by complexities in handling irregular steel lengths and managing external storage for project delays, the company sought an advanced logistical solution. The Combi-SC has led to a drastic reduction in forklift movements, by thousands annually, markedly enhancing site safety and lessening environmental impact at its Leominster facility. Managing Director Paul Read highlighted the system's capacity to move, load, and offload hundreds of tonnes of diverse materials daily, streamlining previously arduous procedures. This capability has eliminated storage challenges associated with project deferrals, enabling efficient material handling, storage, and retrieval. Notably, tasks that formerly demanded two operatives for an entire shift can now be accomplished by one, assembling and loading materials in under an hour. The bespoke 35-tonne Combi-SC, featuring a patented load stabilising system, adeptly manages non-uniform lengths, ensuring secure transit. This innovation has also optimised yard storage, potentially doubling capacity, and reduced the required trailer fleet from 29 to 16, delivering substantial financial savings and strategic land utilisation.
