National Grid has initiated a significant overhaul of its supplier engagement model with the launch of the Electricity Transmission Partnership (ETP), a new framework set to deliver £8 billion worth of vital substation infrastructure across England and Wales. Murphy has been appointed a regional delivery partner in this transformative programme, which aims to accelerate the UK’s clean energy transition by fostering longer-term, collaborative relationships with key contractors. The ETP marks a strategic shift from traditional transactional procurement, offering regional exclusivity for substation work based on performance metrics and commitment to capacity expansion. This approach is designed to provide supply chain partners, like Murphy, with the commercial certainty required for sustained investment in capabilities and skills development, thereby strengthening the UK’s infrastructure delivery ecosystem. This initiative forms a core component of National Grid’s ambitious RIIO-T3 investment plan, proposing up to £35 billion into the transmission network by March 2031. The ETP alone encompasses approximately 130 projects and an initial £1.3 billion in allocated work, affording partners first refusal on future regional pipeline opportunities. Senior construction executives will note the ETP’s potential to drive efficiency and innovation through stable, incentivised partnerships, setting a precedent for future infrastructure delivery models beyond substations.
