Open Doors 2024 – Showcasing careers in construction
The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) recently highlighted the strategic imperative of initiatives like Open Doors Week in addressing the construction sector's pervasive skills shortage and enhancing its public perception. Supporting the programme since its 2012 inception, CCS noted a significant increase in participation for 2024, with nearly 90 per cent of over 170 registered sites engaging, a notable rise from 70 per cent the previous year. This expanded engagement, encompassing over 200 opportunities including head offices and training facilities, underscores a growing industry-wide recognition of the need to proactively cultivate its future workforce pipeline.
For senior decision-makers, these efforts represent a critical investment in human capital and long-term sector resilience. By offering young people direct exposure to diverse career pathways, Open Doors directly confronts misconceptions about construction, which are frequently cited as a contributing factor to recruitment challenges. Looking ahead, CCS is extending its commitment by supporting the upcoming Built Environment Work Experience Week, commencing 1 July, and the Built Environment Academy. These programmes offer more intensive, week-long immersions for year 10 students and beyond, providing invaluable practical insight. Such coordinated industry-wide initiatives are vital for mitigating persistent skills deficits and ensuring a robust talent pool capable of sustaining future growth and innovation. Read More
