Connect Launch Campaign to End Low Pay and Exploitation of Apprentices
Dublin – Ireland's construction sector faces a critical challenge to its future workforce pipeline, as the Connect Trade Union launches a campaign addressing systemic issues within craft apprenticeships. The union highlights that apprentices, who are vital for housing delivery and broader economic expansion, are frequently subjected to pay below the statutory minimum wage, prolonged delays in accessing essential college-based training, and exploitation by certain employers.
Brian Nolan, Connect Assistant General Secretary, states these conditions are compelling skilled workers to abandon their chosen trades or emigrate, exacerbating existing labour shortages. The union criticises the government's perceived inaction, despite prior commitments to reform the apprenticeship system. Scheduled to include a National Craft Apprentices Survey and a promotional film, the campaign aims to quantify the pressures on over 20,000 apprentices across 21 trades. This initiative underscores a critical strategic concern for senior decision-makers in the construction industry: the integrity and viability of the talent development framework. Failure to address these fundamental issues risks undermining long-term project delivery capabilities and increasing operational costs, demanding a robust, collaborative response from both industry and government to safeguard the sector's future. The forthcoming survey findings will provide vital data for informed policy and investment decisions. Read More
