BAM Ireland has demonstrated a tangible advance in sustainable construction through the deployment of Ireland’s first LiuGong 922FE battery electric excavator, a strategic collaboration with subcontractors COD Plant & Civil Engineering. This initiative directly addresses critical industry challenges: operational noise in urban areas and carbon emission reduction. The electric excavator has notably eliminated noise complaints, enabling work to commence at 7 am without resident disruption, a development hailed by BAM Contracts Manager Brian Holmes as a "game-changer" for urban project logistics and community engagement. This adoption forms a cornerstone of BAM’s comprehensive decarbonisation strategy. The company is concurrently investigating 100% hydrogen machinery with JCB and is leading the UK government-funded Element 1 project, which seeks to implement a hybrid hydrogen fuel solution designed to reduce diesel consumption by up to 30% for existing plant. For senior decision-makers, BAM’s multi-pronged approach – integrating electric and hydrogen technologies – offers a pragmatic blueprint for achieving environmental targets while optimising operational efficiency and enhancing stakeholder relations in an increasingly regulated and environmentally conscious sector. This highlights a necessary shift towards diversified, cleaner energy solutions within construction. Read More
